Holistic Dentistry at Adelaide Dental Spa

daughter kissing mom on the cheekAt our Port Adelaide boutique dental spa, we are passionate about helping patients enjoy not only optimal oral health but overall health as well. That’s why we offer wellness-focused holistic dentistry.

Our focus is on preventative care so you can avoid dental decay and periodontal disease. At your dental checkups we will do the following:

  • Perform a full dietary assessment
  • Look at your sugar intake and frequency
  • Ask you about your consumption of soft drinks or juices as they can cause enamel erosion
  • Analyse risk factors like smoking and determine if you have periodontal disease caused by smoking

The Power of Prevention

We believe that it makes much more sense to prevent a problem rather than treat it. If your tooth is in an early stage of decay and hasn’t turned into a hole, we can let you know how to care for your tooth at home to remineralise it. This care includes brushing twice a day with a high-fluoride toothpaste and flossing.

By being proactive with your oral health such as coming in every six months for a checkup and clean, we can avoid the removal of tooth structure. Preventative dentistry saves money in the long run!

Providing Patient Education

Another aspect of holistic dentistry is patient education. We educate people on the reasons for smoking cessation. And we discuss preventative measures involving patients’ lifestyle habits like grinding and clenching that result in loss of enamel and shortening and cracking of teeth. If you do grind your teeth, we can provide a night guard where necessary.

We also can show you at-home oral hygiene techniques aimed at preventing dental disease. We will do demonstrations on how to clean in between the teeth, using aids aside from dental floss. For example, we’ll show you how to help clean under your orthodontic wire retainers.

With holistic dentistry, we try to preserve as much tooth structure as we can. With normal dentistry, much more extensive tooth structure is removed. With traditional dentistry, if you have a filling you might not be given much education as to how to prevent a cavity. Holistic dentistry involves less dental treatment overall and less extensive dental treatment such as fillings, root canals and extractions.

As the backbone of holistic dentistry, minimally invasive dentistry techniques are used to preserve the healthy tooth structure that can prevent decay in the early stages. We don’t drill and fill to destroy the tooth structures. We attempt to remineralise the tooth to stop the decay and return enamel to its original strength.

If there already is a hole in the tooth a minimally invasive approach is to remove any decay, so when there is small decay we don’t need any local ansesthetic or needles as our approach is usually pain-free.

We’re removing less tooth structure which is good for those who are needle phobic. For larger decay and fillings we will usually use local anaesthetic. But we always use numbing gel before. The numbing gel is quite effective, combined with a very gentle technique. We also use composite fillings, not mercury amalgam ones. These fillings mimic the original tooth structure as much as possible.

You’ve likely heard that amalgam fillings could be harmful to one’s health. We can safely remove amalgam using a rubber dam. This dam isolates the teeth, so when we remove the amalgam, patients don’t swallow the mercury.

Is everyone a candidate for holistic dentistry?

Yes, this approach is suitable for most people unless they have severe decay.
Why did you decide to offer holistic dentistry?

We want to look at the whole health of the body-the whole person, not just the teeth. With holistic dentistry, we’re also able to provide patients with more personalised attention.
What cosmetic services do you offer as part of your approach?

We offer tooth whitening, which can dramatically improve the appearance of your teeth without being invasive.

Veneers are also available, which are ideal for addressing gaps between the teeth. If you have a slight rotation where you don’t need to do braces, we can do composite or porcelain veneers. Composite veneers don’t require any structural removal. These tooth coverings can improve the shape, colour, size or length of the tooth. Another benefit of veneers is only minimal tooth structure removal is needed.

We recommend that you have composite veneers before the porcelain ones to get an idea if you like them or you can make changes to them in size, colour or shape. When you’re happy with the composite veneers, you can either leave them as they are or replace them with porcelain veneers by doing a mould of the composite ones.

Onlays and inlays are also available. These are porcelain fillings.
